The News?

Lakeland (Wash.) Police Department Sgt Mark Renninger and officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold and Greg Richards were shot and killed in apparent premeditated execution-style murders on Sunday morning at Forza Coffee Company coffee shop, in Tacoma, Wash.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer in describing the murders used the words "execution" and "ambush" in statements to the press.

The Sunday CBS evening news on Nov. 29 lead their broadcast with the news of professional golfer Tiger Woods who was involved in a one-vehicle accidents that caused minor injuries and happened at 2:25 a.m. on Friday morning. The story ran 2:50. The second story was about the murder of four police officers in Washington. The story ran 1:50.

The Monday, Nov. 30 "Morning Joe" show on MSNBC featuring Joe Scarbourough spent several minutes debating whether they should be spending so much time on the air discussing the Tiger Woods accident story and at 2:00 p.m. that same day, the "Morning Joe" Web site listed five latest videos, two of which pertained to Tiger Woods, including the top video under the title "Latest Videos."

CNN's main Web page features a "Cyber Monday" story and a story titled "Too fat-to-graduate rule under fire. Two Tiger Woods stories and the always-present, seasonal, beat-the-dead-horse story of a house with 250,000 Christmas lights.

Maybe we'll hear more about Lakeland (Wash.) Police Department Sgt Mark Renninger and officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold and Greg Richards after the major networks, cable channels, print media and their Web sites see additional polling and consult with their advertising departments to see if the cop murder story will generate sufficient audience share.

CNN Chief  International Correspondent Christiane Amanpour has said, "And I really believe good journalism is good business." Too bad her bosses at CNN and other media outlets don't agree.
